Chicago police have arrested four men and charged them with drug possession after finding an estimated $39 million worth of high-grade cocaine hidden inside buckets of frozen Mexican avocado pulp.

“This came right over the border,” says Chicago Police Cmdr. Wayne Wiberg.

Acting on a tip, narcotics investigators arrested Ernesto Garcia Diaz, 37, of Chicago and three accomplices shortly after the men allegedly loaded the buckets of guacamole onto a rented flatbed truck at a warehouse in Addison, Ill.

After finding 308 kilos of cocaine bundled in 2-kilogram bricks inside the buckets taken from the truck, police found another 760 tubs of pulp in the warehouse. Although officers joked about opening a bag of chips and digging in, the guacamole -- more than 26,000 pounds of it -- was destroyed.

If convicted, the four men arrested would face a mandatory minimum sentence of between 15 and 60 years in prison, says DuPage County State’s Atty. Joe Birkett, whose office will prosecute the cases.
