The standoff began close to 3 a.m. when police responded to a reported domestic violence incident involving the man and his girlfriend. The woman, unhurt, had vacated her apartment, but the man remained inside. Officers repeatedly tried to contact the man, who they suspected of drinking and having access to at least one gun, but he did not answer phone calls or contact attempts made over a loudspeaker. Tactical teams were called to the scene, but were also unsuccessful in making contact with the man.
Meanwhile, residents in the surrounding apartments of the complex were evacuated and SWAT teams surrounded the unit. Students at nearby Kent Elementary School were kept inside throughout the course of the incident.
At around 10:15 a.m. the man walked onto his porch, and a tactical team officer used his Taser to subdue the man, who was arrested without further incident.
