Inquest Begins for Seattle Woodcarver Shooting

An inquest beginning today will determine whether the King County (Wash.) prosecutor will file charges against former Seattle Police officer Ian Birk, reports the Seattle Times.

Birk, who has turned in his badge and gun, fatally shot John T. Wiliams, a 50-year-old homeless carver.

Demonstrators and Native American groups showed up at the hearing wearing headbands that read "4 sec to death," a reference to the time between when Officer Birk first ordered Williams to drop the knife and the fatal shots.
