Camden, N.J., Hires Back 30% of Laid-Off Officers

Camden Mayor Dana Redd announced she would use $2.5 million paid to the city by the South Jersey Port Corp. and federal grants to hire back the officers, along with 15 firefighters.

The Camden, N.J., Police Department plans to hire 50 officers through the summer, following deep public safety cuts that resulted in the layoff of half of the 370-member force in January, reports NJ.com.

Camden Mayor Dana Redd announced she would use $2.5 million paid to the city by the South Jersey Port Corp. and federal grants to hire back the officers, along with 15 firefighters.

Violent crime in Camden rose 19% following the layoffs, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.
