The 3-year-old son of a Maryland Heights (Mo.) Police officer who fatally shot himself had found the officer's gun in a dresser drawer.
Daniel Metz climbed on top of a plastic laundry basket and retrieved the .40-caliber handgun from the top dresser drawer before shooting himself once in the head on Tuesday, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The boy's father, Officer Ryan Metz, routinely stored the handgun out of reach inside a bedroom closet. On Tuesday, he put the gun in the drawer because he was scheduled to work a private security shift.
