Paramus (N.J.) Police Officer Rachel Morgan returned to work Monday as a detective almost a year after she was struck by gunfire during a pursuit.
Officer Morgan, 32, is on light duty, meaning she hasn't returned to road patrol and has yet to be assigned to a detective division. Morgan has worked for the department for three years.
Officer Morgan was shot twice on Feb. 6 (Superbowl Sunday) while pursuing 23-year-old Michael Carmody. After Carmody's vehicle spun out, Officer Morgan approached his silver Acura to remove him. Two rounds from Carmody's semi-auto 9mm pistol struck her in the abdomen and hip.
Officers Morgan and Ryan Hayo returned fire, ending the gunfight. Carmody died three days later from the head wound.
