After hearing gunshots, an off-duty Collier County (Fla.) Sheriff's sergeant left her Cape Coral home and apprehended the man charged with fatally shooting a door-to-door seafood salesman.
Sgt. Kristin Shiner held Kenneth Roop, 52, until officers could arrive to take him into custody after the Wednesday shooting. Roop has claimed he was "in fear" of the salesman.
Roop is accused of gunning down Nick Rainey, 30, who offered to sell him frozen steaks and lobster at his home. Roop arrived home to see Rainey on his driveway and shot him with a 9mm Glock in the shoulder and in the back of the head as he was leaving, reports the News-Press.
While off duty, Sgt. Shiner grabbed her gun and badge and arrived at the home, where she found Rainey barely breathing. She heard the sound of a gun reloading, noticed Roop in the garage, and ordered him to drop his gun.
"I identified myself," Sgt. Shiner told the News-Press. "I ordered him to put the gun down and on the third order he placed the gun on the ground and came up with his hands in the air."
