A Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff's deputy is in critical condition, after he was shot by a suspect multiple times in Peoria early Tuesday.
The incident began when Deputy Ruben Garcia, a 29-year veteran, conducted a traffic stop shortly after midnight of a suspect who had threatened a former girlfriend.
Witnesses heard gunshots and saw Garcia fall to the ground as the suspect fled into the desert area near 83rd and Happy Valley avenues where he began firing at officers, reports the Arizona Republic.
Responding officers exchanged fire with the suspect and then noticed he was not moving and would not follow commands. A SWAT team responded and approached the suspect's vehicle where they found the man dead.
