A fired St. Louis (Mo.) Police officer is seeking reinstatement after a judge acquitted him of charges that he assaulted a handcuffed teen by striking him with his elbow.
Following Rory Bruce's acquittal by Judge Teresa Counts Burke, surveillance video of the incident surfaced that shows the officer striking the handcuffed suspect. The judge had declined to allow the video into evidence during the trial, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The officers had pulled over the teen on Feb. 20, 2012 and arrested him for driving a stolen car with drugs and guns. The teen had tried to pull a gun on Bruce, causing his partner, Jacob Fowler, to fire in self defense.
Charges weren't filed against the teen, after prosecutors cited insufficient evidence. The agency later fired Bruce after an internal investigation found he had crossed the line. A St. Louis Police Officer's Association spokesman told KMOV that Bruce was following his training when he delivered a forearm shiver to the teen's head.
