Sgt. Kevin Brennan had returned to the location with his former partner Officer Michael Burbridge to help prosecutors prepare for the trial of his alleged shooter, Luis "Baby" Ortiz, a Latin King who fired point blank at the back of Brennan's head.

When Burbridge spotted a suspect wanted in a home-invasion robbery, the two officers jumped out of their vehicle, chased down the two suspects, and took them into custody.

After the shooting in January 2012, Brennan suffered vision damage and an injury to his spinal cord. He has undergone an arduous recovery, and returned to duty in the Intelligence Division to focus on investigative work analyzing files at a desk, reports the New York Daily News.

He was promoted to detective and then to sergeant.
