Commissioner Ramsay told Philly.com he's been "looking at this issue" since December. Earlier this month, the media outlet published a story documenting a 50 percent rise in police shootings in 2012. Officers shot 52 suspects, including 15 fatally, during the year compared to 35 people wounded or killed in 2011.
The DOJ review will be funded by the federal Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and include an analysis of policies, procedures, training, and tactics. It's scheduled to begin in July.
When he headed the Metropolitan (D.C.) Police Department, Ramsay requested a similar review.
