Two suspects have been arrested in the shooting death of off-duty Vermilion Parish, La., sheriff’s deputy Allen Bares, who was killed about 4 p.m. Monday after calling in to report suspicious activity he observed while mowing grass on his day off on South Hospital Drive south of Abbeville.

Louisiana State Police Trooper First Class Stephen Hammons announced Tuesday morning the arrests of Quintylan Richard, 20, and Baylon Taylor, 19, the Advocate reports.

State Police said the suspects knew Allen Bares Jr. was a police officer when they shot him Monday, reports the Advertiser. Trooper Stephen Hammons said Bares, identified himself as a police officer when he confronted two suspects who are believed to have burglarized a home on South Hospital Drive Monday shortly before the shooting.

Bares was transported to Abbeville General Hosptial, where he died from his injuries, Hammons said.

Bares had worked for the Vermilion Sheriff’s Office twice, mostly recently since 2006. In between, he worked for a short time for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, according to the Vermilion Sheriff’s Office.
