California Man Gets Life in Prison for 2014 Death of LAPD Officer

Mynor Enrique Varela struck and killed LAPD Officer Roberto Sanchez—a 32-year-old newlywed at the time of his death—with his SUV and then fled the scene. Sanchez's partner—Richard Medina—suffered a broken jaw and other injuries in the collision.

A 25-year-old man who was convicted of second-degree murder and vehicular manslaughter in the 2014 death of an officer with the Los Angeles (CA) Police Department has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to NBC News.

Deputy District Attorney Geoff Lewin told jurors that Varela used his SUV to try to stop the officers who were trying to make a U-turn to pursue a vehicle being driven by one of Varela's friends.

Officer Sanchez had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for six years.
