Three days after Christmas last year, two officers with the New York Police Department came upon a dog chained to a fence, seemingly abandoned. They freed the animal and delivered it to a shelter.

When one of the officers learned that the dog would be put down if not adopted, he began the adoption process himself, and now has "Joey" as his pet.

At the time of the animal rescue, the department posted an image of the officers with the pup.
