An officer with the Chicago Police Department has reportedly donated bone marrow to save the life of a man who lives more than four thousand miles away in Italy.

According to WLS-TV, Officer Joe Deleon registered to be a donor more than 12 years ago with an organization that connects donors with those in need of life-saving help.

The officer underwent a surgery—which lasted about an hour and a half—and a courier immediately took the donated marrow to the airport for transport to Italy where a 62-year-old man with Leukemia is waiting.

Deleon says he doesn't know if the transplant will be successful but said either way he knows he's done all he could do.
