An officer with the Springfield (MA) Police Department was wounded in an exchange of gunfire in the early hours on Sunday morning.
According to the Boston Globe, the officer—identified as Edwin Irizarry—was struck twice in the arm by two .22 caliber bullets.
The gunman—identified as 25-year-old Kenneth Hernandez—was arrested and has pleaded not guilty in a court proceeding on Tuesday.
He is charged with two counts of firearm-armed assault to murder, carrying a firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, three counts of malicious damage to a motor vehicle, assault with a dangerous weapon.
