An officer who retired from the Buffalo (NY) Police Department following a stroke was surprised on Sunday by a visit from the Publisher's Clearinghouse Prize Patrol delivering to his door a giant ceremonial check for $1 million.

According to the Buffalo News, Cedric Littlejohn was at church when the initial arrival of the check occurred. His daughter then phoned her mother, telling her to get the couple back home as quickly as possible.

"We just won $1 million dollars from Publishers Clearing House. Don't, don't tell dad, don't tell dad. Get home! Get home!" she said.

Littlejohn said he would be donating a portion of the prize money to his church to help in the construction of a new building.
