A Tennessee Highway Patrol officer was shot and wounded during a vehicle pursuit Thursday night on U.S. Highway 27.

The incident happened around 8 p.m., reports the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Troopers tried to stop a vehicle heading north from downtown Chattanooga when they began to exchange gunfire.

The suspect, Cody Seals, then reportedly crossed the median and left the roadway and crashed.

The troopers and Seals exited their vehicles and again began to exchange gunfire again.

Trooper Khalat Ghazi was struck and Seals was also wounded. The second trooper, Rich Thomas, was also involved, but it is not clear who wounded Seals.

Both Ghazi and Seals were taken to a local hospital and were in stable condition.
