An officer with the Chicago Police Department reportedly exchanged gunfire with an unknown individual in the city's Forest Glen neighborhood over the weekend.
An officer with the Chicago Police Department reportedly exchanged gunfire with a suspect in the city's Forest Glen neighborhood over the weekend.
According to NBC News, police say that the officer was heading into work when he noticed several individuals "acting suspiciously" near vehicles in the neighborhood. The officer, reportedly believing the individuals were attempting to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle, stopped the subjects and identified himself as a police officer.
According to officials, one of the individuals pulled out a gun and fired a single shot at the officer. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect in the hip.
Police say the suspects fled the scene, but the injured subject was dropped off at a nearby hospital for treatment and was later identified as the suspected gunman.
Chicago Police Interim Superintendent Charlie Beck said the officer involved in the incident serves as a bicycle officer in the 19th District, and lives in the neighborhood where the shooting took place. He was not hit during the exchange of gunfire.
