Border Patrol Agent Fatally Struck by Vehicle

The California Highway Patrol reported a "severe dust storm" was taking place when the collision occurred around 4:30 p.m. following a collision that happened moments earlier.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent died Monday after he was struck by a vehicle while working a wreck in Salton City, CA.

El Centro Sector Border Patrol Agent Alejandro Flores-Bañuelos, 35, was struck on Highway 86 north, according to a department news release. He was on the scene of a collision during a period of low visibility when another vehicle struck him. 

The California Highway Patrol reported a "severe dust storm" was taking place when the collision occurred around 4:30 p.m. following a collision that happened moments earlier, the Desert Sun reports.

The first collision involved a 2017 Nissan Sentra in the left northbound lane and Flores-Bañuelos was assisting a 75-year-old Pomona woman who was in its passenger seat.

A 64-year-old Borrego man approached in a 2017 Chevrolet at an unknown speed and struck Flores-Bañuelos and the right side of the Nissan, according to the CHP.
