NY Police Department Evacuated Over Suspicious Package

“From a public safety perspective, we always assume it's a danger first. Let the public know, keep everybody safe, until we learn otherwise," says Spring Valley Police Chief Richard Olecszczuk.

The discovery of a suspicious package containing an unknown substance caused the evacuation of the Spring Valley Police Department (NY) and the Spring Valley Village Hall yesterday. The headquarters was reopened shortly after 1 p.m.

“From a public safety perspective, we always assume it's a danger first. Let the public know, keep everybody safe, until we learn otherwise," Spring Valley Police Chief Richard Olecszczuk tells NEWS12.

Police report another suspicious package was delivered Monday to a Jewish private school in Spring Valley. That package contained a substance wrapped in multiple plastic bags. Substances from both incidents will be tested.

The police department also used social media to alert the public about a threat notice posted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation office in Newark, NJ, last week.

“The FBI has received credible information of a broad threat to synagogues in NJ. We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility.  We will share more information as soon as we can. Stay alert. In case of emergency call police,” the FBI tweeted.
