VIDEO: Tennessee Deputy Shot in Face with AK-47

The man accused of shooting at Carter County, TN, deputies Wednesday night and wounding a rookie deputy used an AK-47 assault rifle before running to a cave behind the home, according to the sheriff's office, reports WJHL .

A SWAT team found Kelly Pitts, 36, of Hickory, NC, in that cave "heavily" armed with another rifle and two pistols. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation charged him with seven counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shootout.

When deputies responded just after 9 p.m. Wednesday on a report of an intoxicated man waving around a gun, Pitts allegedly opened fire with an AK-47 from inside the home.

The bullets struck Deputy Jenna Markland, 23, in the face, and a woman identified as Brandy Hyder in her hand. The rifle fire struck three deputy vehicles and pinned down deputies. Sheriff Dexter Lunceford was able to shoot back, though. Once the shooting stopped, Markland and Hyder were taken away from the scene in a truck that belonged to a civilian. They were then taken to Johnson City Medical Center by the Carter County Rescue Squad.

Both Dep. Markland and Hyder were reported to be in stable condition. The deputy was shot in the temple and cheek and might need surgery to remove shrapnel from her face.
