Tampa Police Department Deploys More Than 950 5G Smartphones

Tampa Police Department has deployed more than 950 5G-enabled smartphones through Verizon Frontline to support its Connected Officer initiative and enhance field communications.

Verizon Frontline supplied Tampa Police with over 950 5G-enabled smartphones, giving every patrol officer a city-issued device for secure, mission-critical communication.

Verizon Frontline has deployed and activated more than 950 5G Ultra Wideband-enabled smartphones for the Tampa Police Department (PD) as part of a communications upgrade.

The new devices support the department’s “Connected Officer” initiative, which equips every patrol officer with a city-issued smartphone loaded with law enforcement applications . The program ensures officers no longer rely on personal devices for official business, improving efficiency and information security.

“Our work with the Tampa Police Department highlights our commitment to supporting first responders with advanced network solutions,” said Jessica Roth, Senior Director, Verizon Public Sector.

“Equipping officers with the latest technology is vital to keeping our communities safe,” added Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. “Having immediate access to critical information helps officers act quickly when every second counts.”

The deployment follows major Verizon network upgrades in Florida, including hardened fiber backhaul, expanded generator and battery capacity, and three dedicated Emergency Operation Centers to support network restoration after severe weather .

Verizon also recently launched its Community Disaster Resilience Initiative in Tampa, partnering with local United Way and Habitat for Humanity affiliates. The program includes educational workshops , crisis response support, and post-disaster home rebuilding.
