After a suspect fired dozens of rounds killing two fellow officers last week, wounded Bristol, CT, officer Alec Iurato took cover behind patrol vehicles and fired a single shot to end the attack.

Suspected cop killer Nathan Brutcher died at the scene.

Saturday the Connecticut Inspector General’s Office released a preliminary report on the attack and released video from Iurato’s body camera showing him shooting the suspect.

The report says Sgt. Dustin DeMonte, Officer Alex Hamzy, and Officer Iurato responded to the residence based on a 911 call reportedly from the deceased suspect’s brother Nicholas Brutcher. Arriving on scene, they spoke with suspect Nathan Brutcher at the side door of the house. “They ordered Nathan Brutcher to show his hands and step out of the house.”

According to the report, Brutcher responded by stepping out of the house and firing at the officers. “Nathan Brutcher fired well over 80 rounds attacking the officers from behind, fatally shooting both Sgt. DeMonte and Officer Hamzy, and wounding Officer Iurato,” the report says.

Officer Iurato was hit in the leg but managed to “make his way around the house and back to a Bristol Police Department cruiser.” He can be heard calling in "Shots fired! Shots fired. Send everyone!" He was clearly in pain.

The report says that Officer Iurato’s use of deadly force on Nathan Brutcher was justified.

The investigation of the incident is ongoing.

Under state law the Inspector General is withholding some video from the shooting because releasing it would be an “unwarranted invasion of the personal privacy of Sgt. De Monte and Officer Hamzy, who are both victims of homicide.”

The report does not address whether the 911 call was faked to lure the officers into an ambush.

Why Tennessee’s New Deadly Force Law Matters Beyond Tennessee

Tennessee’s new deadly force law is more limited than many may realize. Effective July 1, 2026, the law applies to a person who is not engaged in conduct that would constitute a felony or a Class A misdemeanor and who is in a place where the person lawfully resides. But it could have far-reaching influence.
