New York Police Department Commissioner Bill Bratton blamed lax gun laws Friday for the alarming spike in murders in Chicago this year, reports the New York Daily News .
The Windy City surpassed 500 murders for the year over the Labor Day weekend, more than New York and Los Angeles combined.
"The problem, some of it, has to do with gun laws that just don't meet the reality of what's going on the streets," Commissioner Bill Bratton said on MSNBC's Morning Joe. "That's a core issue there — the amount of guns and the failure of the laws and government to address that particular issue."
Bratton noted that the Chicago Police Department's number of officers compares favorably with other major metropolitan areas compared to population.
