NYPD Adding 1,000 Patrol Officers at No Extra Cost to the City

About 1,000 more cops will soon be out on patrol — at no extra cost to the city — Police Commissioner Bill Bratton told the Daily News .

The City Council had recently called for the hiring of 1,000 new cops at a cost of $94 million — something both Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio opposed.

Instead, under terms of a budget agreement reached Thursday, the city will spend $6 million to hire 200 civilian workers for desk jobs currently done by officers. Those cops will then be moved into enforcement roles.

And Bratton has plans for several more ways to put officers on the streets without additional cost, inluding reassigning officers on consolidated task forces and waiting for 600 officers to graduate from the police academy in two weeks.
