Nokia's and Harris' new public safety "solution on wheels" is designed to enable 4G/LTE coverage and capacity in one hour or less for first responders in disaster areas or rural emergency situations.

At APCO International this week, Nokia Networks and its public safety partner Harris Corporation launched a rapidly deployable LTE solution, giving first responders 4G/LTE coverage and capacity in one hour or less and allowing faster distribution of data and videos. The solution enables network restoration and remote temporary coverage, which is crucial in disaster or rural areas where coverage is not present or has been compromised, and extended network coverage during special public events.

Custom engineered to meet first responder communications requirements, the Nokia Networks/Harris LTE deployable solution is a field transportable eNodeB system that is installed in a rugged enclosure for off-road operations. It provides grid independent fuel cell powering options, field erectable antennas and several backhaul solutions such as Wi-Fi, microwave and/or satellite. The solution can also be equipped with an optional core network and application server to provide local connectivity in case of backhaul failure.

"The collaboration on the new LTE deployable solution builds upon Nokia Networks' market leading LTE technology and Harris' proven leadership in integrating LTE and land mobile radio systems," said Bob Fennelly, head of government and public safety for Nokia Networks. "By leveraging our Flexi Multiradio Base Station family and Harris' BeOn group communications suite, we are providing first responders a best-in-class commercial solution that ensures delivery of real-time data and video when most needed."

The Nokia Networks/Harris LTE deployable solution includes the latest generation of Nokia Networks' market leading Flexi Multiradio Base Station family, the Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station* (BTS). This solution supports higher LTE capacities and a wider variety of BTS site configurations with a minimized amount of equipment and the industry's lowest power consumption. The LTE deployable solution also includes BeOn, an advanced group communications solution offered by Harris and available as an application for smartphones and similar devices.

In addition, the LTE deployable solution can be equipped with Nokia Networks' groundbreaking Radio Applications Cloud Server (RACS), enabling integration with its Liquid Applications solution. This integration offers accelerated content delivery and real-time utilization of network information through the use of cloud-based technology within the Flexi base station. As a result, operators will be able to deliver entirely new types of real-time services from emergency situations or special public events. These include incident video feeds and critical information such as building diagrams delivered to nearby subscribers as local content, bypassing the need to go back to information stored at the centralized core.

"Broadband service is increasingly important for public safety, and the Nokia Networks/Harris LTE deployable solution extends land mobile radio public safety network services to anywhere broadband connectivity exists," said Dennis Martinez, chief technology officer for Harris RF Communications. "Together with our powerful BeOn application, we are realizing LMR and LTE convergence, providing first responder critical services as push-to-talk voice, situational awareness and streaming video over LTE anytime and anywhere."
