A county attorney has charged Danville (N.H.) Police Chief Wade Parsons with improperly storing his firearm, after the chief's son used the weapon to commit suicide.

Parsons allegedly left his .40-caliber Glock 22 pistol on top of a safe in his bedroom on March 11. He left to run errands, and the 15-year-old son of the chief's girlfriend used it to fatally shoot himself, reports CNN .

The chief was charged with violating a New Hampshire statute that requires any person to securely store a firearm when a child is likely to gain access to it without parental or guardian permission.
