New York Gang Officer Shot Last Week Released from Hospital

Suffolk County (N.Y.) PD Officer Mark Collins left the hospital three days after being shot in the hip and neck, reports WABC-TV.
"The bullet itself came within an inch of vital structures in his neck. He didn't require surgery, which is remarkable, but with that said, he was in a medically induced coma at one point; he was in our ICU and on life support," says Dr. James Vosswinkl.
Officer Collins was shot just before midnight Wednesday following a foot pursuit. During a plainclothes traffic stop, he and two other gang officers in an unmarked police cruiser pulled a vehicle over for a traffic violation. A man jumped out of the car and Collins chased him. There was a confrontation and the officer was shot.
The suspect accused of shooting him has been ordered held without bail. Sheldon Leftenant, 22, was taken into custody following a search of the area.
Police said Leftenant admitted to the shooting. They said he was a well-known gang member, and that he is well-known to Suffolk County police, including Collins.
