Officers with the Eureka (MO) Police Department are mourning the loss of a K-9 recently diagnosed with an aggressive auto-immune disease.
The agency said on Facebook , "It is with great sadness the Eureka Police Department announces the passing of Police Service Dog Reno."
K-9 Reno served the department for seven years—from 2012 to 2019—in patrol duties as well as narcotics detection.
Partnered with Sgt. Mike Werges, the team won multiple awards together over the seven-year span including being named the top narcotics detection team by the German Shepherd Dog Club of St. Louis in 2013. Reno conducted hundreds of searches during his career and visited with thousands of citizens.
K-9 Reno was the fourth to serve in the agency's K-9 unit.
