Des Moines Police Officer Dao Meunsaveng was hit head-on by a pickup truck Tuesday. Firefighters had to cut him and his K-9 partner Berro from the patrol SUV.

Police say a pickup truck hit the officer’s vehicle head on when it crossed into his lane.
"A pretty violent crash, " Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department told KCCI .
Firefighters were called to the scene to mechanically extricate Officer Dao Meunsaveng and K-9 Berro from the vehicle.
Officer Meunsaveng was taken to a nearby hospital in serious but stable condition, according to police.
K-9 Berro was treated at an emergency veterinary hospital and released.
Both Berro and Officer Meunsaveng are expected to recover.
