Alabama Sheriff Asks for Donations for Backup Weapons

All certified deputies are to carry a concealed weapon on them at all times while off-duty now, and the agency is taking donations to offset the cost.

The DeKalb County, Ala., Sheriff is changing policy. All certified deputies are to carry a concealed weapon on them at all times while off-duty, reports WRCB-TV .

County officials ordered 55 Glock 43 9mm handguns, which will remain the property of the DeKalb County (Ala.) Sheriff's Office. All deputies receiving a gun will have to go through certification classes designed for backup weapons.

The cost for the guns and ammo will be $22,000 to 25,000 dollars. The Sheriff's Office is taking donations to help offset the cost.
