As I approach the end of my law enforcement career, I was asked an interesting question recently: Would you become a police officer today?
Ten years ago, I wouldn't have hesitated and an instant response would have been "Of course I would."
Today, though, the answer demands much more reflection.
My answer is still yes. But there’s a caveat to that answer: Yes, the job has been interesting, challenging and an opportunity to serve, and I would do it all again.
However, sadly, I will not readily steer my children toward a similar life choice.
I couldn’t pretend in good conscience that a new officer will have a career like I’ve had, knowing how drastically different a cop's job is today.
