The TPT R7 NiMH Rechargable Full-Size Duty Flashlight from 5.11 Tactical features an intelligent switch that allows you to pick one of three modes: high, low, and strobe. On high, it puts out 504 lumens and 17,467 candela for 5.5 hours. On low, the TPT R7 has an output of 182 lumens, and the strobe mode puts out the full 504 lumens. Tested to ANSI FL1 standard, the light features a polymer PC/ABS body, NiMH (full D) rechargeable batteries, Cree XM-L LED technology, and a regulated circuit for maximum output. Police Dogs

Law enforcement agencies typically purchase K-9s from trainers or dealers who acquire them from Europe, where legacy blood lines have been long established. Breeds most commonly used for detection and apprehension include the Belgian Malonois, German Shepherd, Dutch Shepherd, and a variety of Labradors. Dogs can be single purpose (for apprehensions) or dual purpose for apprehensions and detection for narcotics, explosives, or cadavers. Read "K-9 Training Challenges" for more detail. Boston Motor Patrol

Boston celebrated two centennials in 2012—the building of Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox and the founding of the Boston Police Department's motor unit, which is known as the Mobile Operations Patrol (MOP) unit. The two centennials came together on Sept. 16, when agency brass recognized the unit's heritage during a ceremony in front of Fenway's "green monster" wall in left field. H.D. gloves provide hard-knuckle protection and a thicker cowhide leather palm and fingertips for increased protection and wear. Returning To Duty: Todd Young

Fremont (Calif.) Police Officer Todd Young returned fire, after a violent Norteno gang member fired 10 rounds at him at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 27, 2010 on a street in Oakland. Officers performed trauma care on Young and delivered him to Highland Hospital, where he received life-saving emergency medical care. He is now recovering and plans to rejoin the SWAT team later this year or in early 2013. We feature his story in the June 2012 "Shots Fired" and "Todd Young's Long Road Back."

East Coast Blood Hand Signs

Gang members use hand signs to communicate with each other and to challenge rival members or law enforcement officers in what they call "throwing signs." After forming in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, the Bloods street gang spread to the East Coast and formed "sets." These sets include the Piru Bloods, Fruit Town Brims, and South Side Brims (in western Maryland). The hand signs in this gallery were recovered during a multi-agency investigation earlier this year. Victory Police Motorcycles

Victory Motorcycles, a division of Polaris, has introduced three new motorcycles into the police market for 2012—the Commander I, Commander II, and Vision. The touring-type bikes are conversions of the civilian Victory models Cross Country, Cross Roads, and Vision Tour respectively. The distinctively styled bikes have been upfitted for police use, tested in Michigan and Los Angeles by precision LE drivers, and adopted by several smaller agencies. Victory reps tout the officer-safety features on the cycles.

K-9 History: Riverside (Calif.) PD

Riverside (Calif.) Police Officer Loren Mitchell became the first officer in his agency to work with a police dog when he was partnered up with "PAL" in 1958. Chief Sergio Diaz and the City Council honored the now-retired Officer Mitchell for this historical achievement at a City Hall ceremony. The photo gallery includes an apprehension the pair made during a 1950s traffic stop.
