After stepping off the shuttle bus and into a dust storm, I determined that attempting to shoot any firearm long distance would be far more challenging than my novice rifle shooting skills could handle. I primarily stuck with handguns and short-range rifle shooting.

Action Target installs full-scale indoor and outdoor ranges for law enforcement, as well as portable systems. Action Target's Track Runner heavy-duty track-mounted moving target system is designed for more permanent range installations. Unlike portable systems where the target is suspended from a steel cable, targets used with the Track Runner are mounted to a trolley that runs on a special track mounted close to the ground. This approach is ideal for realistic tactical applications because the target can move to different locations, change speed and direction, and dart in and out of cover. Neck Index—Draw your handgun and hold it in a one-handed grip, then draw your flashlight, grip it in your non-shooting fist, and position the light against your neck on your non-shooting side. Now as you sweep with your body and your gun hand, your head and neck will naturally follow and so will the beam of your light. Pros: Works with small or large lights. Works well with tail cap-activated lights. Allows simultaneous illumination of both your sights and the target. Easy to search without muzzle sweep. Easy to transition into flashlight strike. Cons: Limits user to one-handed gun grip. Can draw fire to head. Can create excess flash on sights.

Beretta says its new Pico is the thinnest .380 auto made. The snag-free Pico's slide and frame are a true 18 millimeters at their widest point. The grip frame, sights, and caliber (go from a .380 to a .32ACP by changing the barrel) are all simple to modify. The chassis can accommodate a Lasermax Laser frame and be customized with a selection of colored frames.

Each year the latest firearms, law enforcement gear, and shooting sports products make their debut at the Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show. This year's show is scheduled for the middle of this month at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas. And from what the POLICE editorial staff is hearing from some of the top law enforcement product manufacturers, the guns making their debut (or U.S. debut) at SHOT 2014 will continue some of the trends that we have seen in the last five or so years. Since the expansion of concealed carry laws nationwide, some of the biggest sellers in the firearms market have been compact or even pocket-sized pistols. The word from major pistol makers is that this trend will continue and probably gain steam. The other major trend in the firearms market is the AR-variant rifle. These semi-automatic versions of military-style rifles called "modern sporting rifles" in the industry continue to be extremely popular as target and hunting rifles with gun enthusiasts and as patrol rifles for law enforcement. Both new and improved versions of ARs will be on display at this year's SHOT.

Up-and-coming AR maker Windham Weaponry announced a new .308 rifle in late fall. At 7.5 pounds, the Windham .308 SRC is one of the lightest 7.62mm AR variants on the market. Features include a 16.5-inch medium profile chrome-lined barrel, Picatinny rail, six-position telescoping buttstock, Hogue overmolded beavertail pistol grip, and 20-round Magpul Pmag. Retail price is $1,431, and the rifle is covered by Windham's lifetime transferable warranty.
