A 35-year-old Pierce County (WA) Sheriff's deputy died Wednesday afternoon from wounds he suffered during a Tuesday SWAT operation in Spanaway.
"We are heartbroken to announce that Deputy Dominique Calata has passed away. There is no procession scheduled for today, information about a procession and memorial will be shared at a later time," the Pierce County Sheriff's Department wrote in a statement.
Sheriff Ed Troyer told Fox13 Calata's organs would be donated.
Deputy Calata and Deputy Richard "Rich" Scaniffe, 45, were both shot while serving a high-risk warrant Tuesday. The suspect was killed.
Scaniffe remains hospitalized. According to the sheriff's department, Scaniffe underwent surgery for serious injuries but is expected to survive.
Calata is survived by his wife and a young son.
