An Adel, GA, police officer was shot multiple times early Saturday morning while investigating a report of a stolen vehicle.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is now handling the shooting investigation, the shooting happened just around 2:15 a.m. when two officers with the Adel Police Department responded to a report of a stolen car.

One of the officers Katelynne Nitschke was shot and wounded. She was reportedly in stable condition as of Sunday. The extent of her wounds has not been released.

The GBI says suspect Steve Newsome, 31, was also shot multiple times in the exchange of fire with the officers. He died at the scene, 11Alive reports.

Officer Nitschke has been with the APD for just over a year, according to MSN.com.
