A Tuscaloosa, AL, police officer was saved by his body armor Monday when he was shot while responding to a call about a man with a gun at a local apartment complex.

The suspect is in custody. Police say he fired multiple shots at officers who returned fire, WBRC reports.

The suspect is wanted in Mississippi on an assault with a deadly weapon charge. Officers said the man was found to have been hit during the exchange of fire with officers and he has a non-life threatening injury.

The suspect is currently being treated for his injuries, and warrants have been obtained for 3 counts of Attempted Murder. Investigators said due to security issues the man’s name and photo will not be released until the formal booking.

Officials say a second officer suffered a minor injury—not from gunfire—during the incident.

Both officers were treated and released at a local hospital.
