Police shot and killed a man suspected of murder during an exchange of gunfire in Highland on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

One San Bernardino police officer was wounded in the shooting, and is expected to survive, acting San Bernardino Police Chief Eric McBride told the San Bernardino Sun.

The shooting took place about 3:30 p.m. in a residential area.

A team of officers and detectives were in the area with a warrant to arrest a man police identified as a suspect in the killing of a person in San Bernardino earlier this year, McBride said.

When officers came into contact with the man, he opened fire on officers, prompting them to return fire, McBride said. Police gunfire struck the man, who was hospitalized and later died.
