2 Chicago Officers and Suspect Wounded in Traffic Stop Gunfight

Officers reportedly pulled over a vehicle that matched a description for an earlier call about a person driving around with a gun.

Charges have been filed against the suspect in a shooting that wounded two Chicago police officers Sunday on the West Side, authorities say.

The 19-year-old suspect, identified by authorities as Jeffon Williams, was also wounded in the exchange of gunfire, which began with an early Sunday traffic stop.

Officers reportedly pulled over a vehicle that matched a description for an earlier call about a person driving around with a gun, police told NBC Chicago.

One officer was shot twice on the left side and was in serious condition. He underwent surgery for lung and abdominal injuries, and was still in hospital care Sunday evening, police said.

The other officer suffered a gunshot wound to his left shoulder and was in good condition, Hollister said. He was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon.

The suspect is in fair condition. The nature of his wounds was not released.

Authorities expect all three to survive.
