California Officer Fatally Shoots Man Holding "Assault Rifle"

An officer with the San Leandro (CA) Police Department fatally shot a man armed with an "assault-style rifle" late Wednesday night.

An officer with the San Leandro (CA) Police Department fatally shot a man armed with an "assault-style rifle" late Wednesday night, police say.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the incident occurred after a vehicle pursuit that led San Leandro police into the city of Oakland, where the vehicle crashed into the rear of an unoccupied parked car.

After the crash, the man emerged from the car with a long gun, and officers opened fire, striking him several times. The officers at the scene then attempted to perform life-saving first aid, but when paramedics arrived, the man—whose name has not yet been released—had died.
