The chief of police for the Los Angeles Police Department recently told a gathering of command staff that amid calls for defunding the department patrol officers must "show their relevance" in order to keep the budget from being slashed.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles police Chief Michel Moore said that every unit is under a microscope and must prove its worth in order to remain intact.

The LAPD is reviewing its operational structure from top to bottom and pushing forward with potentially far-reaching internal changes.

Calls to cut the police budget in Los Angeles is a stark reversal from just a few months ago, when there were public calls to add funding to the police force to deal with increased crime and other issues amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
