An El Paso police motorcycle officer was critically injured in a crash Thursday morning and is in the intensive care unit at a hospital after undergoing surgery, officials said.

El Paso (TX) Police Department Officer Daniel Rodriguez was struck and run over by a sport utility vehicle that cut through a funeral procession that the officer was escorting, police said.

Rodriguez was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, officials said Thursday evening.

He is assigned to the El Paso Police Department's Westside Regional Command Center in the traffic section as a motorcycle officer, reports the El Paso Times.

Police said the collision happened at 9:35 a.m. when a Dodge Durango driven by Nicole Anne Pabon, 41, made a left turn, cut through the procession, and hit the officer.

Another officer in the procession and a bystander pulled Rodriguez away from the vehicle and performed CPR.

Rodriguez is the second El Paso motorcycle officer to be hit during a funeral escort in less than a week.
