VIDEO: Oklahoma Officer Faces Murder Charge Over Shooting of Suicidal Suspect
An Oklahoma City police officer was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder, accused of unjustly shooting a suicidal person last month.
Keith Patrick Sweeney, 32, is charged in Oklahoma County District Court. District Attorney David Prater filed the charge himself Tuesday morning, NewsOK.com reports.
Sgt. Sweeney fatally shot Dustin Pigeon, 29, early Nov. 15 after the man called 911 threatening suicide, police reported. Officers responded to a house in southwest Oklahoma City and found Pigeon holding a bottle of lighter fluid and a lighter, threatening to set himself on fire, police reported.
One officer deployed a less lethal bean bag shotgun, striking Pigeon in the left hip, police reported. Sweeney discharged his firearm, striking Pigeon multiple times, according to police. The man died at the scene.
