An off-duty Rowan County (N.C.) Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed an armed man who was attempting to rob a Salisbury, N.C., restaurant Tuesday night.

Dep. John L. Kempf, 41, was dining at the China Buffet when he confronted the suspect who was carrying a shotgun and wearing a mask, police say.

The suspect, identified as Sakhar Robinson, 21, was shot in the torso, the Salisbury Post reports. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
