Oregon University Seeks Armed Police Officers

Currently, the university's police department has 18 Glock 21 Gen 4s and two Glock 17 Gen 4s. However, the handguns are only used for training since the university does not have the state's permission to carry firearms.

The president of the University of Oregon will ask the state Board of Education to arm campus police for the first time in the university's history.

Currently, the university's police department has 18 Glock 21 Gen 4s and two Glock 17 Gen 4s. However, the handguns are only used for training since the university does not have the state's permission to carry firearms, reports the Register Guard.

In 2011, the university created its police force after the Oregon Legislature and the state Higher Education Board gave approval. But student leaders testified against arming police officers, prompting the Higher Education Board to request that university officials return at a later time for separate permission to carry guns. The board will vote on June 21.
