The Atlanta Police Department ordered and started receiving 2,300 Glock 22 Gen4 service pistols. The department-wide transition to Glock began mid-July and will continue through April 2014.

The Atlanta PD conducted a full year of extensive testing before selecting the Glock pistols based on the product's reliability. The SWAT team adopted the Glock 21 Gen4 pistol due to mission-specific requirements for .45 ACP, according to Glock.

Prior to transitioning to Glock, the agency worked with a Massachusetts-based pistol manufacturer. According to Glock, 65 percent of agencies in the country use Glock pistols.

"We believe Glock offers a trusted, superior firearm for our officers," Chief George Turner said. "Making sure our officers are provided the best equipment possible is in keeping with our mission of creating a safer Atlanta by reducing crime, ensuring the safety of our citizens and building trust in partnership with our communities."
