A former Florida police officer who asked for the death penalty after robbing and murdering nine people is scheduled to die by lethal injection on Tuesday.

Manuel Pardo, a one-time officer with the Sweetwater Police Department, has exhausted his appeals. Pardo's attorneys had attempted to argue that killing him via lethal injection was cruel and unusual punishment, reports the Miami Herald.

Pardo was convicted of the muders in 1988 and told jurors, "I'm not a criminal. I'm a soldier. As a soldier, I ask to be given the death penalty. I accomplished my mission."
