An Oregon correctional officer was killed late Monday, when he stopped to help a stranded motorist near Pendleton in the eastern section of the state, reports The Oregonian.

Officer Buddy Herron was assaulted and killed along Highway 11 at 11 p.m. Monday. Officer Herron, 42, was en route to his shift at the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution.

Portland resident Joshua Charles Weeks, 22, was arrested about two hours later near Hermiston after a chase in the pickup. On his Facebook page, Weeks acknowledges spending time in jail and adds: "I have suffered through a pretty intense meth addiction and I am workin a 12 step" program.

Officer Herron leaves behind four children.
