A paramedic who regularly serves with the Putnam County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office SWAT team is being credited with saving the life of a deputy who was critically wounded.

Quin Romay was on hand when the team raided a drug house in western Putnam County a week ago. A bullet struck veteran deputy Randy Hayes, finding its way around his protective vest and lodging in his chest. Romay rushed to have Dep. Hayes removed to the SWAT van and treated until he could be transferred to a dispatched ambulance.

Romay also serves as the county's emergency manager and has volunteered as the SWAT team's medic since 1989.
